The Good,The Bad and The Referee
The Fifa World Cup 2006 brought many a spectacle, with the most amusing of them being the refereeing blunders... Not so amusing for the team at the recieving end of them though...Lets take a look...
Graham Poll (Croatia vs Australia)He showed Josip Simunic(Croatia) not one, not two but three yellow cards before finally sending him off. So we have :
3 yellow cards = 1 red card
He announced his retirement soon from international football..
Luis Medina Cantalejo (Italy vs Australia)He didnt spot a dive from Fabio Grosso(Italy) inside the penalty box and instead of cautioning Grosso, he awarded Italy a 95th minute penalty,or rather Italy a place in the next round and tickets for the Australian team back home..
The Italian Job completed...
Sigh !!
Horacio Elizondo(England vs Portugal)After a tussle involving Rooney(England) and Carvalho(Portugal), Rooney's foot caught Carvalfo's groin. Christiano Ronaldo came running in to convince the refree that Rooney deserved a card.Rooney gently pushed Ronaldo(his Manchester United teammate) and the referee promptly showed Rooney the red.
Valentin Ivanov(Holland vs Portugal)Ivanov seemed to think cards were chocolates and the payers were children, and he were the Santa.. Promptly rewarding one player after another with cards, the game ended with a world cup record tally of 16 yellow and 4 red cards.. (For the full article on this match click here)
